lady wisdom, an excellent woman, an awesome woman, a virtuous woman, values, valuable, worthy, industrious, spiritual, compassionate, empathy

Lady Wisdom…

What does it take to become an exceptional woman – a truly wise woman? A woman of valor & courage? A strong woman?

And if you are a man, looking for a partner – who do you need to be to attract that understanding and amazing woman? If you are already married, how do you love and support an outstanding and wise woman?  **Just a note… in Jewish culture, Proverbs 31 is memorised by the men… not the women.**

How do you become wise, virtuous, exceptional, compassionate, creative, courageous, worthy, and blessed?

Who is the woman in Proverbs 31 of the Bible?

Some say she is simply Lady Wisdom.  Proverbs begin speaking about Lady Wisdom, and it would seem appropriate to end the book of Proverbs with an Ode to Lady Wisdom.

Proverbs 1:  The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young—
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.

Wisdom’s Rebuke

20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
    she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall she cries out,
    at the city gate she makes her speech:

Proverbs 2 is dedicated to the virtues of Wisdom and the practical aspects of how to find her!

But this Ode at the very end of Proverbs … this poem of 22 lines… each line starting with a letter of the Hebrew Alphabet… holds much more than simply this.  It is also a celebration of the every day.  Admittedly, as written and befitting of kings, it is an ode to the everyday achievements of an upper-class Jewish wife.

And if we look at the modern-day woman… isn’t she already doing all of this, minus the servants? Perhaps she no longer is making her clothes and the clothes of her family with her hands, but if we consider that women have been found to spend between 85-90% of their income earned on their home and families, whereas men typically only spend 35-40% of their income earned on the family… she is still the primary care-taker of the home.  She is still the one making sure that her family is properly clothed and fed.

An amazing woman who keeps her household functioning day and night by

  • buying,brave, courageous, courage, valor
  • trading,
  • investing,
  • planting,
  • sewing,
  • spindling,
  • managing servants,
  • extending charity,
  • providing food for the family,
  • and preparing for each season.

It deeply celebrates the often-overlooked glory of the everyday.

This is Wisdom in action!

Inner beauty – spiritual:

Proverbs 3 (v3, 5-6) says:

Do not let mercy and kindness and truth leave you
[instead let these qualities define you];

Trust in and rely confidently on I AM with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding
{trusting only in your five physical senses, your perceptions,
your understanding of limited proportions}
In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Spirit,
And I AM will make your paths straight and smooth
[removing obstacles that block your way].
